SUGGESTIONS FOR MORNING PRAYER
In this column I will share with you suggestions for morning prayer. The key word in both cases is "suggestions". If you have a prayer format that works for you, keep it. "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." "Pray as you can, not as you can't." Also, remember the best prayer is the one that is:
Honest-speaks about what we really think and feel.
Connected to our daily lives-flows from the real stuff going on in our lives.
The biggest danger with the prayers I place before you in this column is that they become just words that do not express your true thoughts and feelings and do not speak to the real "stuff" in your lives. Despite that real danger, the following prayers and songs are very beautiful and may express much of what you think and feel. Also, the great value of formulated prayers is that they can help you to pray when you feel you have nothing to say to God. Presently, I am writing a booklet that may be titled: Daily Prayers for the People of God. It will include morning, midday, evening prayers and a bunch of miscellaneous prayers. If you have a particular prayer that speaks to you, please pass it along to me as soon as possible (Remember, I leave this Friday for vacation.) I will consider including your prayer, but don't be offended if I don't.
MORNING PRAYER
Begin by taking a moment to consciously become aware of God's presence in you and surrounding you. "In Him, we live, move, and have our being", (Acts) Remember this thought about prayer: "Prayer is less a matter of what we do, or try to do, than of what God does in us if we create a space for him."
Then you might want to say the following prayer.
Lord, open my lips to praise your holy name.
Cleanse me of any worthless
evil or distracting thoughts.
Give me the wisdom and love
necessary to pray with attention,
reverence and devotion.
Father, let my prayer be heard in your presence,
for it is offered through Christ Our Lord, Amen
Songs/Prayers of Praise
Before we ask God for anything, it is important to raise our voices in praise of Him who is the source of all good and who keeps us in being moment by moment. The following are some songs of praise that are sung throughout the world especially by men and women who live in monasteries and begin each day singing the praises of God. You may not be able to sing the following songs of praise, but you can recite them remembering that you are a member of a worldwide choir offering morning praise to God. You may be able to actually sing the first hymn. If so, do sing it-remembering that "he who sings once prays twice.
Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
To your feet our tribute bring;
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore your praises sing;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King.
Praise you for your grace and favor
To your children in distress;
Praise you still the same as ever
Slow to chide and swift to bless;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Glorious in your faithfulness.
Angels, help us to adore him
You behold him face to face
Sun and moon, bow down before him.
Join the praises of our race;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise with us the God of grace.
Another beautiful hymn of praise that you can sing or recite in the morning is:
I Sing the Mighty Power of God
I sing the mighty power of God,
That made the mountains rise;
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day;
The moon shines full at your command,
And all the stars obey.
I sing the goodness of the Lord,
That filled the earth with food;
He formed the creatures with his word,
And then pronounced them good.
Lord, how your wonders are displayed,
Where e'er I turn my eye:
If I survey the ground I tread,
Or gaze upon the sky!
There's not a plant or flower below,
But makes your glories known;
and clouds arise, and tempest blow,
By order from your throne;
While all that borrows life from you,
Is ever in your care,
And everywhere that we can be,
You, God, are present there.
Now you can continue with one or more of the following morning prayers.
(1)
As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.
May Christ shield me today . . .
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,
Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone
who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone
who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
(2)
I thank you, Lord, for the wonder of my being,
for giving me another day to love and serve you.
May I often think of you during it!
Inspire everything that I say and do this day.
May it all begin from you and, with your unfailing help,
be carried through for your glory;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
(3)
God of my life,
I welcome this new day.
It is your gift to me,
a new creation, a promise of resurrection.
I thank you for the grace of being alive this morning.
I thank you for the sleep that has refreshed me.
I thank you for this chance to make a new beginning.
This day, Lord, is full of promise and opportunity;
let me waste none of it.
This day is full of mystery and the unknown:
help me to face it without fear or anxiety.
This day is blessed with beauty and adventure;
make me fully alive to it.
During this day keep me thoughtful, prayerful and kind.
May I be courteous and helpful to others,
and not turned in on myself.
Keep me from any word or deed
that would hurt, or destroy, or belittle.
And may the thoughts of my mind be
pleasing in your sight.
When night comes again, may I look back on this day
with no grievance or bitterness in my heart.
Lord, bless this day for me and everyone.
Make it a day in which we grow to have the mind
of Christ, your Son. Amen.
Prayer to Our Guardian Angel
Whether we realize it or not, as followers of Jesus we are daily engaged in spiritual warfare. The devil is always seeking to take us down physically, emotionally, morally and spiritually, hence our need to seek the protection of "our heavenly body (and spirit) guard".
Prayer to Our Guardian Angel
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
To whom God's love entrusts me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
Spend a Few Minutes Reading/Reflecting on Verses of Scripture or a Good Spiritual Book
After reciting some of the above prayers or prayers that speak to you, consider spending a few minutes reflecting on some verses of scripture or a good spiritual book. If you are not sure where to begin consider reading James, Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, the letters of Peter and John. For those of you who are retired, consider getting one of Richard Morgan's devotional books e.g. No Wrinkles on the Soul-A Book of Readings for Older Adults. Upper Room Books 1-800-972-0433. www.upperroom.org/bookstore. Another web site for older adult ministries reading is www.nccumc.org/OlderAdultMinistries/readinglist.htm.
Prayers of Petition and Intercession
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;
In the morning I lay my requests before you
And wait in expectation Psalm 5:3
And I tell you, ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find;
Knock and the door will be opened to you. . .
If you then, who are wicked,
know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will the Father in heaven
give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?
Luke 11:9, 13
Prayers of Petition are prayers for ones own needs e.g. physical or emotional health, spiritual transformation etc. Talk to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit about whatever is going on in your life. One big reason our prayer life may seem dull and dry is that it does not flow from the real stuff going on in our lives. Now for some samples which need to be adjusted to fit your life situation.
Sample Prayers of Petition
Father thank you for the gift of another day, may I live it in a way pleasing to you.
Father, help me to know in my heart the unconditional love you have for me. Free me from all unhealthy images of you I may have in my mind or heart.
Holy Spirit, help me to discover and become the person you created me to be.
Jesus, help me in my relationship with N____. You know how much he/she bugs me and drives me nuts.
Jesus, just as you calmed the mighty seas, calm my fears, anxieties and worries. Help me to place my total trust in you.
Jesus help me to be kind and charitable to all I speak to and meet this day.
Jesus help me to carry my crosses especially (name your crosses e.g. poor health, a bad relationship, anxiety etc).
Holy Spirit, guide me in my decisions. Help me to choose well. Teach me to pray just as Jesus taught his disciples.
Holy Spirit, help me to have a sense of humor and laughter especially when I take myself and others too seriously.
Holy Spirit, help me to recognize the moments and experiences in life that speak to me about the deepest desires of my heart.
The above are samples. Add your own as you feel led. Remember to let your prayer of petition flow from whatever is going on in your life. Also, be honest with God. If disappointed or angry with him or others, say so. If you are feeling down, say so. If you are not particularly repentant about some sin, say so, and seek the grace of sincere repentance.
Prayers of Intercession
First of all, the, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.
(1 Timothy 2:1-4)
It is only at the end of this world that we shall realize how the destinies of persons and nations have been shaped, not so much by the external actions of powerful people and by events that seemed inevitable, but by the quiet, silent, irresistible prayer of persons the world will never know.
Fr. Anthony de Mello S.J.
Prayers of Intercession are for others. Just as Mary placed before Jesus the needs of the young couple at Cana, we place before Jesus the needs of others, trusting like Mary, that he will take appropriate action and always remembering that "God's ways are not our ways" (Is 55). Our Prayers of Intercession should have a global dimension to them. The list that follows is long and is both global and local in nature. The following is a necessarily long list to remind us of the many issues our prayer should at least sometimes include. On any one day you may choose to pray all of the following prayers or just a few of them. You may simply say: "I offer this decade of the Rosary for all the intentions on this list." Always allow yourself flexibility in prayer. What is important is not how you pray, but that you do pray and that your prayer is honest and flows from the real stuff going on in your life.
Creator God, bless and strengthen all who are trying to teach us how to protect and respect your beautiful creation and our environment.
Creator of all life, help us to protect and respect the dignity of all human life from the womb to tomb. We especially pray for all women considering abortion today. Send your angel to protect the child in their womb. Convert all abortionists and all who are pro-choice and in favor of capital punishment and euthanasia.
Father protect us against terrorists. May they soon be captured and brought to justice. Protect our troops and all engaged in war against terrorism. May the leaders of Christianity, Judaism and Islam come together to help create a more peaceful world.
Father be with all who daily labor to end world hunger and illiteracy. Bless the efforts of Phil and Barbara Warwick, our parishioners, who seek to bring the Gift of Clean Water to populations that do not enjoy a gift we daily take for granted.
Good and Just God, strengthen and empower all who fight injustice wherever it is found in our world, be it in our legal system, economic and labor policies.
Holy Spirit guide and bless all who are engaged in the research to find a cure for the diseases that plague our human family, such as cancer, Alzheimer's, mental illness, AIDS, deafness, blindness, pedophilia.
Jesus, comfort and console all who daily live with physical, emotional and mental illness and pain.
Jesus comfort and console all who are grieving a loss of any kind. Bless support groups that seek to help people deal with loss.
Jesus, deliver all who are plagued with an addiction. We especially pray for all who are addicted to alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, buying stuff they don't need. We pray for all who spend their days helping people with addictions.
Jesus, bless the ministry of all groups (such as retreat centers and counseling facilities) and individuals who seek to bring healing and deliverance to all who are hurting and in bondage due to poor choices and past hurts. We pray especially to seek your blessing for individuals involved in our parish healing ministry.
Jesus, Good Shepherd, protect our Holy Father, bishops and priests and deacons. Help them to be holy, loving and wise shepherds of us your people. May all the men and women you are calling to the priesthood and religious life hear and answer your call.
Holy Spirit, thank you for the men, women and children who minister in our parish. Bless their ministry. Bless all who contribute to the financial support of our parish and other good causes. Help all of us to be good and generous stewards of our time, treasure and talent.
Good Shepherd, help our church to find creative ways to seek out all who are alienated from you and your church. Bless all who are seeking to bring spiritual renewal to our church family.
God, watch over and guide our President and the leaders of all nations. Help them to be wise and compassionate. Give then a heart for justice, peace and care for the most vulnerable members of our society.
Jesus comfort and console all who will receive bad news this day. May they have strong faith and good friends to comfort them.
Jesus comfort all who are dying at this time. Help them to have a peaceful death.
Jesus be with all who are undergoing tests and surgery at this time and are worried about the outcome. Guide the mind and hands of all surgeons who will operate on people today.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, protect and guide families, especially the families of our parish. Keep them strong in faith. Help parents to see the serious obligation they have to help their children to know and love you. Be with the sick members of our parish family. Heal hurting marriages and relationships.
Good shepherd, help all who are searching for missing children and loved ones to find them. Convert all who would harm children.
Father, bless in a special way our families, friends and benefactors, all those who affirm us, love us, give us a ride to the doctor, store or church, or help us in any way.
Jesus, you who spent a night in jail and was severely punished for a crime you did not commit, be with all who are in prison especially the innocent. May they soon be released. Convert the guilty. May all, especially the poor, receive fair representation. Give judges and lawyers a deep passion to be just and fair. Be with prison guards. May they bring the compassion of Jesus to their work.
Add your own special intentions.
Spend a Few Moments in Quiet
Take a few minutes to sit quietly in the presence of the Lord. If God made us with two ears and one mouth, perhaps he intended us to listen twice as much as we speak. Then you can end with this prayer or one of your own choosing.
Loving and Caring Father
You have brought us to the light of a new day:
Keep us safe the whole day through.
Protect us from every sinful inclination.
May all our thoughts, words and actions
Aim at doing what is pleasing in your sight.
We make our prayer through Christ your Son,
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
One God, for ever and ever. Amen
